WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY GROUP

At our very first meeting, during my first year leading the WSG, a woman asked, “Well, what exactly IS spirituality?”  My answer to her at the time was, “It’s a feeling of connection – to G-d, to community, to others.”  It seems like a century ago that the question was raised and answered.

This month, I’m reminded again of the conversation.  As some of you already know, I have been very ill this last couple of months, and unable to lead my group.  But other members of the WSG stepped up to the plate and quickly cancelled October’s meeting.  They ran the November “toiletries for the women of Women in Distress, Broward County” for me, assembling almost 60 gift bags and then delivering them, so these women, thrust from the danger that surrounded them, would have something of their own to make themselves feel a bit prettier again.

Connection … a funny thing, this.  During my illness, I’ve been surrounded by so much love, so much caring, that it’s hard to put into words how astounded I am by it all.  These women cooked for me, for my family, while I was in the hospital.  Some of them came and cleaned my house so I could come home to neat surroundings.  Others called, sent cards, made donations to the Temple for my healing, sent flowers, visited me in the hospital when I was well enough to see visitors (not until the very last days!).  My feelings run deeper than gratitude.  It’s more like awe.

There is nothing … NOTHING … like the company of women.

I fully intend, G-d willing, to be at the rest of our WSG meetings this year – always the third Tuesday of the month.  December’s meeting will be a surprise (not for me … I know what I’m planning).  In January, we will have our Tu B'Shevat seder, in celebration of the trees.  And we’ll talk about our own family trees that evening, as well.
