I was just reviewing the Temple calendar for the next few months. We have so many wonderful speakers, programs, and events coming up in the New Year. For our Adult Ed Scholar-in-Residence Series, our first guest is Arthur Kurzweil, on Friday night, January 11th, and at Shabbat renewal Saturday, January 12th. Mr. Kurzweil is the best selling author of From Generation to Generation and is often described as America’s foremost Jewish genealogist. He is also the author of Kabbalah for Dummies and On the Road with Rabbi Steinsaltz. He is trained as a professional librarian, editor-in-chief of the Jewish Book Club for 17 years, and a past president of the Jewish Book Council. Mr. Kurzweil is also an accomplished magician. He is a member of the Society of American Magicians and a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. On Saturday night after Havdallah service, he will present a magic show intertwined with Talmudic insight (Note: this Magic Show is not for children). Our second guest is Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. He is described by the Washington Post as the “quintessential religious lobbyist” on Capital Hill. Rabbi Saperstein is also an attorney and teaches First Amendment Church–State Law and Jewish Law at Georgetown University Law School. He has written for The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Harvard Law Review. Rabbi Saperstein will be our Scholar-in-Residence on Friday night, February 1st, and will speak to us on global warming as part of the Temple Beth El Global Warming Conference in Memory of Philip Shuchman. Our third Scholar-in-Residence is Professor Ronald H. Miller. Dr. Miller will be our guest on the weekend of March 7th & 8th. Dr. Miller is the Chairman of the Department of Religion at Lake Forest College in Illinois. He has a PhD from Northwestern University, and has been on the faculty of Barat College, Northwestern University and Loyola University of Chicago. His publications include Fireball and the Lotus, The Wisdom of the Carpenter, and The Hidden Gospel of Matthew. The weekend is sponsored by Dodie Weinstein & Bob Goldberg. This is Dr. Miller’s third visit to Temple Beth El. January will also feature our Progressive Dinner Dine Around, on Saturday night, January 26th. We have secured several beautiful homes for this event, graciously hosted by members of our congregation. Invitations have been mailed, and we ask that you return your response to the Temple office no later than January 11th, as space is limited. The evening will conclude at the Temple with music, dancing and sumptuous desserts. This event was very popular last year, so make your reservations early! The Temple will be hosting its 7th Annual Auction on Saturday night, February 23rd. Brian Kaplan of Stampler Auctions will again be our Auctioneer. Some of the items available that night will be weekends at resort hotels, rounds of golf, art, collectibles, china, jewelry and Judaica. There will be refreshments and a cash bar. Admission is free. This event has become one of our largest fundraisers, second only to our Gala, which will take place on Saturday night, May 30, 2008. Additional information about the Gala will be mailed in the next few months. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Scholar-in-Residence weekends and events. It is your support that makes them a success! B’ Shalom
