Jewish Renewal

 Shabbat Renewal 2007-2008

These interactive services integrate the following practices with traditional Jewish worship:  Yoga, meditation, a spirited Torah discussion, and music with an instrument for everyone.  Our goal is to unite mind, body and soul.  Our worship is at a deeper level and full of joy.

A communal lunch with Rabbi Tuffs and Cantor Manny follows each service.  Please bring a dish, dairy or vegetarian, for four to share.

Dress is casual.  You owe it to yourself to experience this kind of service and to feel the elation.

Joyful Shabbat Renewal Services at Temple Beth El

Shabbat Renewal Services will begin again for the New Year on October 20, 2007, from 10 am to 1 pm.  These especially spiritual and joyful services usually occur once a month.  We start with gentle yoga exercises with a Jewish touch.  This helps us to clear our minds, balance our bodies, and get us ready to focus on our prayers.

Judaism urges us to take care of our God-given bodies.  As a line in our prayer book says, “Limbs and tongue and heart and mind – our whole being – shall join to praise Your name.”

Our goal is to integrate body, mind, and soul.  The service is lead by Rabbi Tuffs, playing his guitar, and Cantor Manny Silver, with his warm, melodious voice.  Drums, tambourines, and shakers are available to all who want to join in.  As Psalm 150 reads, “Halleluyah, praise God with the harp and the lute... with drum and dance... with strings and pipe... with cymbals resounding.”

A spirited Torah discussion and meditation, led by Rabbi Tuffs, rounds out the service.  Words are inadequate to describe these experiences.  You owe it to yourself to come join us.  You will walk away uplifted, happy, and in a mellow mood, regardless of how tense and stressful your week has been.  This will also carry you into the next week with a feeling of peace.

Attendance at Shabbat Renewal Services is two to three times greater than that of our regular Saturday morning services.  Following the service, we share an enjoyable lunch with Rabbi and Cantor Manny.  Everyone brings a vegetarian or dairy dish for four and the variety of food at these lunches is amazing.  Please dress casually.

Weather permitting, we often hold these services in the Lester and Marion Sternfeld Pavilion, a beautiful outdoor space generously donated by Mrs. Sternfeld.  This adds a symphony of birdsong to our music and prayers.

We would like to welcome you to these special, joyful Shabbat Renewal Services in our warm and friendly Temple Beth El atmosphere.
