This class is for people wishing to convert to Judaism…or for anyone who just wants to increase their knowledge of the history, ritual practices, ethical beliefs, and holidays of the Jewish people. Totally Talmud: Rabbi Tuffs. The Talmud has been the foundation of Jewish life for almost two millennia. Come sharpen your mind by engaging in a lively conversation with the Sages of Old and discover Judaism on a deeper level. This year we will be studying tractate Ta’anit. Wednesdays, October 13 – December 8, 2010; Starting 2011: February 16 - May 25; 10:30 am – Noon.
Musar – Jewish Ethics: Rabbi Tuffs. Connect or reconnect with the spiritual side of Judaism as we investigate the art of contemplative prayer, in-depth study of Torah, and ways of incorporating Jewish spirituality into everyday life. (8 week course) Wednesdays, Oct. 13, 20, 27; Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24; Dec. 1; 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm.
Siddur: Rabbi Tuffs. Come and learn about the new Reform prayer book Mishkan T'Filah. This is a great opportunity to become fluent in the language of Jewish prayer. Study the prayers and songs of the Sabbath and week-day services. Rabbi Tuffs will also discuss the theological and mystical secrets embedded in our worship. (4 week course) Wednesdays, 2011: January 19, 26; February 2, 9; 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm.
Overview of the Torah: Rabbi Tuffs. This class will teach how to navigate your way through the Torah. The Five Books of Moses contain the major codes of law and narrative history of our peoples' beginnings. We will explore the major themes, characters, and concepts. Judaism and the Search for Meaning: Rabbi Chaim Kovacs. The Book of Psalms, Tehillim, is traditionally attributed to King David and is thought to provide messages for every life situation. This class identifies some of the valuable insights from the writings of King David and the Sages of the Talmud, from which you will hopefully discover the key to unlock the greatest treasure of all – yourself. “Everything You Wanted To Know About Being Jewish But Were Afraid To Ask!”: Elaine Rudner. Join Elaine for an informal course that answers the Who, What, When and Why of being Jewish. Learn to appreciate rituals and traditions and gain greater knowledge and understanding of the Torah, our religion and practices. Come with your questions! Elaine is a teacher, lecturer and discussion leader who has developed her career in all phases of Jewish education and social work. Week 1 – Let's talk about the TORAH (and clear up the mysteries); Week 2 - How the Hebrew Alphabet Began: it's a mystical journey; Week 3 - Sirens of Scripture: Women in the Bible; Week 4 - Heroine's of the Holocaust and the Jewish Homeland; Week 5 - Three Generations of Funny Jewish Women – the true Saga of what it means to be Jewish, Female and Funny!
